Survivor Kanker Pankreas Siap Lakukan Perjalanan Motor 3.800 Mil Untuk Amal

Dan Winkelman, a pancreatic cancer survivor, is set to embark on a 3,800-mile motorcycle fundraising ride called “Hope on the Road” to support early cancer detection. He hopes to raise $1.2 million for research. After battling Stage 3 cancer, Winkelman emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and effective treatment. The journey will also raise awareness about the disease, with community support playing a significant role.

Stevens Point—Dan Winkelman, a pancreatic cancer survivor, is gearing up for a remarkable 3,800-mile motorcycle ride called “Hope on the Road.” This endeavor aims to raise funds for early cancer detection and research on treatment, with Winkelman hoping to increase the survival rate beyond the current 13%. His experience as a survivor put him among a small percentage, and he wants to spread awareness about this deadly disease.

Winkelman’s story is quite fascinating. He served in the U.S. Air Force after enlisting at age 17. His journey later took him to Myanmar as a missionary with his wife, where a motorcycle accident led to a shocking cancer diagnosis in 2018, confirmed by a CT scan and subsequent biopsy.

The reality of pancreatic cancer hits hard; there’s a high mortality rate despite lower incidence. The American Cancer Society indicates that only 13% of pancreatic cancer patients survive more than five years. After returning to Wisconsin, he found out his cancer was Stage 3. This stage meant the tumor had invaded surrounding arteries and nerves. After undergoing rigorous treatment, which included months of chemotherapy, he finally underwent a successful surgery in March 2019, and he’s been cancer-free ever since.

Reflecting on his journey, Winkelman emphasizes the need for early detection. “The thing about pancreatic cancer is you don’t know you have it until it’s too late,” he said, urging for improved awareness. Following his treatment, he partnered with various organizations and foundations to advance cancer research, notably the Seena Magowitz Foundation.

Winkelman’s health post-treatment benefited significantly from Ortho-Molecular Products Inc., which provided supplements that helped restore his energy and gut health. He believes that proper nutrition is key to recovery, and he credits these products, overseen by the FDA, for his improved condition.

He also works with the Seena Magowitz Foundation, which connects patients and caregivers while funding vital research. “I’m so thankful I found them. It’s only right to help raise awareness,” Winkelman expressed, highlighting the importance of community support.

Now, with his motorcycle ride ahead, he’s been training actively at 212 Fitness to build strength. “The best thing someone can do post-cancer is strength train,” Winkelman noted, revealing that this training is crucial for the long hours of riding.

The goal for the ride is to raise $1.2 million for pancreatic cancer research, with plans for 300 to 350 miles driven each day. He’ll camp and stay in motels, traveling with his son, Andy, and others. The journey includes help from technology-savvy granddaughter Faith Marie, who will support him remotely.

A special send-off event is scheduled for June 13 at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, before Winkelman heads to Alaska, aiming to complete the ride by July 8.

Dan Winkelman’s upcoming 3,800-mile motorcycle ride aims to raise crucial funds for pancreatic cancer research and detection. As a survivor himself, he’s determined to increase awareness and support others battling this often-deadly illness. His journey is not just about the miles but also about creating change and hope within the cancer community.
