The UcanACT cancer prevention initiative will present its results in Brussels, showcasing its success in promoting outdoor physical activity for adults over 50. With 62 participants in Kilkenny experiencing improvements in fitness and wellbeing, the project aims for broader rollout after favorable assessments in multiple cities in Europe.
In Brussels, a significant cancer prevention initiative called Urban Action Against Cancer (UcanACT) is set to present its findings to the EU Parliament. Launched in Kilkenny, this innovative project focused on promoting physical activity in outdoor green spaces, and encompassed exercise programs led by physiotherapists. Last year, 62 adults aged 50 and above participated in sessions across three parks, including individuals living with cancer, survivors, and those without any cancer diagnosis.
The pilot, which also took place in Bologna, Italy, and Munich, Germany, aims to provide community-driven exercise programs as tools for both preventing cancer and offering support for older adults. The results, being showcased by Kilkenny County Council alongside the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and EU partners, will be discussed on Wednesday, urging for a broader rollout of the initiative.
The project enables participants to engage in exercise at their own speed, fostering a supportive environment that encourages physical activity. Patrick Griffin, a 78-year-old prostate cancer survivor involved in the pilot, shared his personal experience noting positive effects such as improved posture and energy levels after participating in the program, stating, “The team were so well organized… which is of massive benefit.”
Janette Boran, the Healthy Kilkenny coordinator, highlighted that focus groups revealed notable benefits among participants, including enhanced fitness, balance, sleep quality, and reduced anxiety. She noted significant reduction in fatigue and improvement in quality-of-life scores as key outcomes of the study. Participants often expressed surprise at their achievements, particularly with specialized guidance from physiotherapists, reinforcing the value of individualised attention even within a group setting, as many varied needs were accommodated during sessions.
UcanACT will also feature prominently during Your Council Day on June 27th, celebrating the ongoing efforts and services of council organizations throughout Ireland. Overall, this initiative not only emphasizes physical fitness among older adults but also focuses on enhancing the mental wellbeing of participants through outdoor activities.
The UcanACT initiative demonstrates the potential of community-led exercise programs as effective tools for cancer prevention. By focusing on outdoor physical activity, the project has positively impacted participants’ mental and physical health, with numerous benefits reported. With its promising results presented to the EU Parliament, there are hopes for a wider implementation of the program.
